Polls delay a serious issue for democracy
Delimitation Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya has emphasized the importance of holding Local Government (LG) elections on time, stating that the delay in doing so poses a serious challenge to the democracy of a country.
He indicated that efforts are being made to conduct either a Provincial Council (PC) or LG election this year, with hopes that one of the postponed elections could be held before World Democracy Day on September 15th.
Deshapriya also highlighted that the Supreme Court had declared the country's governance without the mandate of the people and their representatives as unlawful.
