SIS informs Prez of attempt to repeat 9 May 2022 unrest
President and Defence Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe have reportedly received intelligence reports indicating another alleged attempt to create public unrest similar to an incident that occurred on May 9 of the previous year (2022), according to Cabinet of Ministers Spokesman, Dr Bandula Gunawardana.
Gunawardana stated during a press conference that the President had informed the Cabinet about the information he received from the State Intelligence Service (SIS).
He claimed that the intelligence reports point to certain groups associated with the "aragalaya" movement (a movement against the former government led by Gotabaya Rajapaksa) and linked with the opposition, planning to incite events similar to those in May 2022.
These events are allegedly planned under the pretext of ongoing issues such as drought, electricity crisis, and water shortage. Gunawardana asserted that there are intentions to surround the residences of certain ministers with added security measures to counter potential attacks.
He also alleged the involvement of media institutions in inciting violence by using the drought and farmer agitation as excuses, intending to destabilize the country and potentially trigger confrontations with law enforcement.
