Grade 6 Life Skills : Qualities that should be inculcated as a good citizen - Part 6

In this article, let us discuss the attribute; “Economical use of resources” and how it can be cultivated among us in order to be good citizens in the society.

Do you know that natural resources of a country help us to fulfill our needs? The resources are limited in nature and it is important that we protect them for the future generations. These resources include air, water, sun light, wild animals, mineral resources, land and etc. Natural resources help the existence of living beings and are essential for their survival. Man uses these resources to produce  man made resources/goods like plastic goods, furniture, bricks, glassware, porcelain, floor tiles, vehicles, paper, leather products, instruments and so many that satisfy our unlimited needs. However, it is essential to use the limited resources economically without wasting them. For example, we use clean water as it is a basic need to survive. But do you know that humans waste a lot of water as they are careless and negligent of its value?  Humans don’t stop from there and they dump garbage and industrial waste to the water that leads to pollution in a vast scale. It makes water to lose its quality.

Similarly, other natural resources like mineral resources, land, air and etc. should be used economically. Some resources like mineral oil deplete upon the first use, where we cannot use them once it’s burnt. Depletion of resources owing to the satisfaction of numerous needs of a rising population has become a critical issue that poses a huge threat to the environment. It should be noted that resources are not found from everywhere and its distribution is unequal. Thus, it costs a lot for a country to import the resources that are not available in it. Therefore, it is essential that these resources are used carefully and preserved for the future generations. A good citizen will avoid wasting the resources and contribute towards their preservation. If this attribute is inculcated among the individuals of the society, it will result in time and cost savings, less pollution, preservation of resources for the future and reduction in the disasters in the environment. Hence, it is essential to equip one’s self with the quality of using resources frugally in order to be a good, dutiful citizen.
