New postal law to digitalise service in Rs. 10 Bn PPP

New postal law to digitalise service in Rs. 10 Bn PPP

The Ministry of Mass Media in Sri Lanka plans to introduce new amendments to the postal act, focusing on digitalization and modernization of the postal service. The postal law, presented over 100 years ago, will be updated to adapt to the modern world.

The new act aims to bring the postal service in line with international standards and introduce new technologies. The process is still in drafting, supervised by the Ministry of Justice.

The proposed act is expected to be presented to Parliament later this year. The government intends to implement the modernization as a joint public-private partnership, investing Rs. 10 billion to make the Postal Department a profit-making institution within the next two years.

The aim is to reduce the financial gap between income and expenditure, ultimately creating a self-sustaining Postal Department.
