The unofficially established; The World Marijuana Day

4% of the world’s population between the ages of 15 and 64 use cannabis according to the United Nations report. For centuries, marijuana has been used by humans for medicinal and recreational properties. Recently, it became a hot topic pertaining to its legalization and regulation.

Although some countries have legalized the Medicinal and recreational utilization of marijuana other countries are still hesitant to legalize it considering it an illegal and dangerous, drug. In 1961, the United Nations refrained from marijuana during the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, held in New York. They consider it a substance containing dangerous properties.

Nevertheless, the united nations decided to withdraw from this agreement due to the recognition of its therapeutic properties. This happened in 2020.

In the 21st century, Marijuana was first legalized for recreational purposes. Uruguay became the first country in 2013 and then Canada in 2018 followed by Mexico in 2021. In the United States, this drug is not fully legalized, however, in 2014, Colorado became the first state to legalize it for recreational use.

The unofficially established World Marijuana Day is on April 20. The date is related to the number 420. The numbers 420 and 20 are associated with an anecdote from 1971. A group of students in California United States found a map of an alleged marijuana plantation and then they left. Plus they met every day at 4:20 PM to search. But they were unsuccessful. The story transcended to establish April 20, (4/20 in English) as world marijuana day.
