Grade 6 Citizenship : Qualities that should be inculcated as a good citizen - Part 7

We are aware of the fact that the government provides a series of services to the general public, in the pursuit of fulfilling their needs. The machinery, equipment, buildings and other materials in the stations that are engaged in providing public services can be cited as Public Property. These government owned property aim at ensuring the well-being of the public and providing numerous services. These are not profit oriented and are focused on public welfare. Public property is available to everyone in the society without any bias.

Education is a public service that is provided in our country through which the government aims at satisfying the educational needs of the students. Hence, we get to use public property such as libraries, laboratories, equipment, instruments, sports facilities, text books, desks, buildings and etc. It is the prime duty of students to use these property carefully and reap the fruits to one’s self by getting its maximum use.

Similarly, all public property are entrusted with providing a series of public services and these are free of charge. The buildings and equipment of government hospitals, roads, safety fences, traffic lights, bus stands, buses, railway stations, parks etc. can be cited as examples of such public property.  People do not have to spend money to receive public services. Hence, we should be mindful of the fact that the government spends a large amount of money in order to provide these services.

When public property is protected, it helps us to preserve them for the future generations while allowing the government to receive cost savings due to the reduced rates of repairs and maintenance. These savings can be utilized in the other areas of the country that require development. Moreover, when public property is safeguarded, the services can be provided properly and with more efficiency.

As individuals in the society, it is our prime duty to protect public property. We should use these property in a way that it can be used by others as well. People should not be selfish and it is essential to protect the public property while avoiding misuse. We must protect the rights of others while enjoying these services. As responsible citizens, we must inform the authorities about the damages and instances of their misuse.  It is essential that we make the payments in relation their maintenance properly and on time.

Thus, it can be concluded that protecting public property is a quality inculcated in a good citizen.
