The Businessman in Mt Lavinia had allegedly failed to feed the dogs for one week and as a result one of the pregnant dogs had died. The arrest was made following a complaint by the members of an organization campaigning for the rights of animals and protection of the environment.

The Mt Lavinia police who made the arrest was told that two of the dogs found were pregnant. The businessman had travelled out of Colombo without making arrangements to provide food and water for the animals. The 48 year old businessman was operating a business of trading expensive pet dogs.
