Is Sri Lanka heading for the next surge of COVID 19 cases

Is Sri Lanka on the brink of the third wave of a surge of COVID19 cases is the question posed by many who prepare for the upcoming new year. Despite severe warnings by health authorities preparations underway for a grand-scale new year celebrations including the traditional games,

Among those who have issued a warning is the Public health inspectors Association who are expecting the coronavirus third wave to hit Sri Lanka in May. Public Health Inspectors (The PHI) Association said that despite several warnings, most people were seen going about their day-to-day lives in public without strictly following the coronavirus health guidelines.

PHI Association Secretary Mahendra Balasuriya told a local newspaper that the Mrs. Sri Lanka drama, the environment issue and the contaminated oil issue overshadowed the more serious issue linked to the coronavirus which was developing in the background.

He said that this resulted in the public also assuming that things were back to normal and the fear for the coronavirus dying a natural death.  But  other medical authorities say that the necessary guidelines have been issued and it was upto to the public to follow them.

However the responsibility falls on the PHIs and the Police to implement the necessary guidelines. Among the guidelines are that certain competition should not be held in view the coronavirus situation .
