Dinesh says passing resolution on Lanka exposed western countries

Foreign Minister  Dinesh Gunawardena has described the result of the voting of the United Nations Human Rights Council resolution passed on Sri Lanka a set back to the western countries. Hours after the resolution titled ‘Promotion of Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights in Sri Lanka’ was adopted with 22 voting for and 11 against and 14 abstaining minister Gunawardena came out with his reaction.

As the resolution was co-sponsored by the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Malawi he said it was mainly the western countries which were behind the move. He said that going by the voting figures 25 members were either against or abstained and thereby getting 22 to pass the resolution was not a victory.

Prior to the voting, Britain’s representative said his country regretted that Sri Lanka had withdrawn from the earlier consensus resolution and noted the human rights situation in Sri Lanka had been deteriorating, especially in relation to minority rights. Austria also supported the resolution. For Sri Lanka China, Pakistan and Philippines spoke in favour.
