Former Governor Azath Salley arrested

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Arrested the former Governor of Western Province Azath Salley on the advice of the Attorney General.

 

Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said he being detained and interrogated under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism (PTA). 

 

Mr Salley last Saturday visited the Cinnamon Gardens police and said he could be arrested if necessary in regard to the controversial remarks he made in respone to the comments by Justice Minister Ali Sabry who had said that amendments to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act will be introduced..

 

Mr Salley has insisted that separate Muslim laws should continue to remain inforce.

 

The issue about his arrest was also raised at the weekly cabinet news conference while several others too had expressed concerns as to why he was not arrested.

 

The Attorney General instructed the CID that since there was sufficient evidence that he had committed an offence under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and violated the International Covenant on Civil and Political. Rights (ICCPR) Act, No. 56 of 2007 he could be arrested.
