A proposal to double the compensation for wild elephants

Minister of Wildlife and Forest Conservation C.B. Mr. Ratnayake is to submit a proposal to the Cabinet to double the amount of compensation to be paid under the Wild Elephant Compensation Scheme for damage caused by wild animals.


According to the proposal, compensation for human deaths caused by wild animals such as elephants, leopards, bears, wild boars and crocodiles will be paid without any discrimination.


Accordingly, it has been proposed to pay Rs. 10 lakhs as compensation for loss of life, Rs. 1 million for total disability, Rs. 150,000 for partial disability, Rs. 200,000 for damage to houses and property and Rs. 5,000 per month for higher education for a child who loses his parents.
