Grade 9 Life skills : World of Work - Part 4

Grade 9 Life skills : World of Work - Part 4

We learnt that it is essential that individuals are well aware about one’s own strengths and as well as the jobs that exist in the world of work that will best suit their capabilities. At present, the world of work is quite competitive and there are many people who possess numerous skills and abilities. Eventually, the top cream of the job seekers are being recruited to the most influential companies or employment opportunities. However, in order to face this competition successfully, it is important that you are aware about the number of pathways that are available for those who intend to apply for various employments. In this case, it is significant that you are updated with the information in relation to the subject streams at school, academic qualifications, professional qualifications, vocational qualifications, training programs and courses. Following the correct pathway will always ensure that you are directed properly as you step in to the world of work.

This begins as you make choices among the group subjects that are offered in the ordinary level curricula. In this case, you should never select these subjects for the sake of it or just because someone else follows them. These choices have a big impact on your future carrier and you must make your choice based on your future goals and abilities. For example, if you are quite good at creative writing and possess a passion for literary works, you may select English Literature. This will be helpful if you aspire to follow the arts or languages stream and pursue a carrier in law or international relations.

Thus, it is important that you have a clear picture on what you want to become and your abilities prior to selecting subjects at school. This applies to the selection of your stream in advanced level classes too. You can make a choice on one of the five major streams that are offered (Science, Mathematics, Commerce, Technical and Arts). For an instance if you select the science stream; the medical profession, administration service, laboratory technicians, dentistry, nursing and teaching are some professions that could be followed in future. The students who select the mathematical stream can get jobs in the fields like engineering (electronic, mechanical, software, network, etc.), architecture, information technology, administration service, etc.  Managers, administration officers, accountants, assessors, and analysts are some typical jobs that are available for those who have perused the commerce steam. The technical subject stream is another variation that can be followed to get jobs in the fields of computing, motor mechanism, machine and electronic equipment repairing an etc.

The arts stream can be followed either by making a choice on languages or selecting other arts subjects like political science, geography, economics and etc. Lawyers, legal officers, teachers/lecturers, administration offices, diplomats, clerks, and etc. are some jobs available for those who follow the arts stream. Nowadays, you can select subject combinations from different streams as well.  For example, you can select accounting and economics (economics is also offered in the arts stream) from the commerce stream and English literature from the arts stream. However, this depends on the capacity and the resources of the specific school/institution. Proper selection of subjects is essential when it comes to the undergraduate studies at the university as well.
