EC seeks funds to settle 2023 LG polls preparation costs

The newly appointed Election Commission has requested financial provisions from the Ministry of Finance to settle payments owed to institutions involved in activities related to the Local Government Elections 2023. 

 

 

The Elections were initially scheduled for March but were postponed indefinitely due to insufficient funds. The Commission has sent two letters to the Treasury Secretary, seeking the release of the necessary funds. 

 

 

However, they have yet to receive a response, and the work related to the elections remains at a standstill. A private member motion has been tabled in Parliament to empower the Minister to extend the tenure of the lapsed LG bodies without elections.
