Death of a patient: Two NIMH staff suspended

The death of a patient at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) following an alleged assault has prompted three separate investigations.
The Ministry of Health, the Police Department, and the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) have all initiated inquiries into the incident.
Three individuals linked to the incident have been arrested and suspended from their duties. The HRCSL conducted a suo motu investigation, visiting the NIMH and the Mulleriyawa Police Station to gather information.
The 48-year-old patient with bipolar disorder tragically passed away from injuries resulting from the alleged assault by hospital assistants during an attempt to restrain the individual.
