Aswesuma welfare program

The Government has not yet set a deadline for concluding the examination of appeals and objections regarding the Aswesuma social welfare programme. The programme aims to provide monthly allowances to different categories of families in need.
The Welfare Benefits Board allowed concerned parties to file appeals and objections after allegations of non-transparent beneficiary selection.
State Minister of Social Empowerment, Anupa Pasqual, confirmed that a timeframe for the examination had yet to be determined.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena instructed officials to finalize the bank account opening process for payments and emphasized the immediate disbursement of benefits to beneficiaries.
The Aswesuma welfare benefit payments began on 1st July. Still, there were protests and claims of improper beneficiary selection, leading to extending the appeals and objections deadline from 30th June to 10th July.
