Taxes on several foods, including dried fish and sprats

Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Finance has issued a special gazette notification imposing a special excise duty on dried fish, sprats and several other food items.


Accordingly a tax of Rs. 100 per kilogram of dried fish and sprats, a tax of Rs. 150 per kilogram of Kurakkan flour and a tax of Rs. 82 per kilogram of mustard seeds have been imposed.


There is also a tax of Rs. 880 per kilo on butter or milk products and Rs. 40 per kilo on sea water, including salt.


The tax will be effective for one year from August 12 this year.
