Increase of smuggling attempts in jails

There has been an increase in the attempted smuggling of banned items into the country's prisons and a senior official warned that those responsible face the risk of being thrown into jail.

He said the relevant authorities has recorded a substantial rise in the flow of banned items being smuggled into the jails by visitors or thrown over the walls.

"The prison officials are alert all the time but at the same time they are unable to bring a total end to such illegal activities, the official said.

Those apprehended with banned items with the intention of passing it on to inmates will be placed in remand and will have to undergo the similar experience as that of their acquaintances who are already in jail", the official said.

Among the items detected by the authorities are mobile phones, batteries, narcotic substances, tobacco etc, he further said.
