Appeals Court annuals summons issued on President over disappearance of two human rights activists

The Court of Appeal today annulled the summons issued on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on the disappearance of two Sri Lankan human rights activists.

The summons was issued on the President in 2019 by the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court over a case filed in this regard.

The case was filed over the disappearance of Sri Lankan human rights activists Lalith Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganandan.

Rights and political activists Lalith Kumar Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganandan went missing a day before World Human Rights Day, on 9 December 2011 and were last seen in the Kaitaddy area in Jaffna.

Weeraraj and Muruganandan were reported to be documenting disappearances in the Northern Province during and after the end of the war in 2009, at the time of their disappearance.
