Islandwide efficient first aid training for health staff

The Health Ministry's Injury Prevention and Control Unit's Injury Prevention Programme National Programme Manager consultant, Dr Samitha Sirithunga, has announced the initiation of special training for healthcare staff across all districts. The training aims to equip them with efficient methods of administering first aid to patients following accidents.

Dr Sirithunga highlighted the alarming statistics of accident-related admissions to state hospitals in Sri Lanka, with over 1.3 million cases annually. He noted that approximately 10,000 to 12,000 people lose their lives yearly due to accidents, resulting in an average of 35 to 45 deaths daily. In response to these figures, the Health Ministry's Injury Prevention and Control Unit has launched a new program to reduce accidents and associated fatalities.

The program's primary objective is to ensure that first aid is efficiently provided to accident victims. The training provided to health staff will focus on teaching the correct and most effective steps after an accident. By doing so, the healthcare system aims to deliver the most efficient and effective first aid to the public.

In addition to the training program, the unit has also planned to conduct an accident review program, likely to assess and analyze the circumstances surrounding accidents to identify areas for improvement in accident prevention and response strategies.
