For Buddhists in Sri Lanka, Poson is the most important Full Moon Poya Day. The day commemorates Arahant Mahinda's introduction of Buddhism to the island in the third century BC.

The Great Arahant Mahinda is said to have preached the Dhamma to King Devanampiyatissa, the country's king at the time, in Mihintale. Cullahatthipadopama Sutta was chosen by Arahant Mahinda as the first discourse seed to feed Buddhist Philosophy to King Devanampiyatissa.
