2023 LG Polls postponement

The Supreme Court has decided to postpone the consideration of petitions filed against the postponement of the 2023 Local Government Elections until tomorrow (26). 

 

 

The petitions were filed by the National People's Power and the People's Action for Free and Fair Elections, seeking to declare that the people's fundamental human rights were violated by the delay in holding the elections on 9th March 2023, as initially scheduled. 

 

 

The case was heard before a five-Judge bench led by President's Counsel and Justice Buwaneka Aluwihare. However, the hearing was adjourned because one of the judges, Justice Priyantha Jayawardena PC, was involved in another trial.
