Proposed UNP-led alliance Top N-E parties to play ‘major role’

The United National Party (UNP) plans to form a massive alliance under the leadership of President Ranil Wickremesinghe for the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.
The alliance is expected to include supporters from significant parties in the North and East, as well as members from the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the main Parliamentary Opposition Party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).
UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara stated that discussions have begun with several parties to garner their support for President Wickremesinghe's candidacy.
The alliance aims to unite people from diverse backgrounds, including Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, and members of different political parties, to work towards the country's betterment.
Despite speculations about other potential candidates, the UNP believes President Wickremesinghe is the best choice to gain most citizens' support.
The UNP-led alliance is set to be one of the largest alliances in the country's electoral history. However, the SJB and the SLPP have also expressed their intentions to field their respective candidates for the Presidency.
