CEA to sue unlicenced, fire-gutted Katuwana chemical factory
The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) plans to take legal action against the chemical factory in the Katuwana Industrial Zone, Homagama, which was engulfed in a fire on August 17.
It was discovered that the factory needed an Environmental Protection Licence (EPA) issued by the CEA. CEA Spokesman Ajith Weerasundara stated that legal provisions exist for such action.
The CEA will require a comprehensive inspection report before the Legal Division files a case. The fire, which was extinguished with the help of multiple fire brigades and security forces, faced challenges due to chemical combustion.
The public was advised to avoid the area due to potential exposure to hazardous chemicals.
