Police Constable takes firearm, flees to Dubai

A police constable attached to the Mount Lavinia Police Station has fled with a T-56 firearm and 30 rounds of ammunition.
Police spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga said that the officer took the weapon and ammunition when he left for duty on the night of February 8.
However, the officer failed to report for duty and did not respond to calls made to his mobile phone.
Further investigations revealed that the officer had flown to Dubai from Katunayake Airport on the same night, the spokesman said.
In response, SSP Manathunga said police are coordinating with Interpol to bring the officer to Sri Lanka.
The firearm has yet to be recovered, and police continue to investigate the matter.
