Sri Lankan cyber criminals chase women

The Sri Lankan internet scammers are busy and a fair match to their count parts in rest of the world. However the scammers are more interested in harassing women as they see them as soft targets.  

 

Last year the police received 40% more complaints of cybercrime than the previous year. More than 3,500 complaints have been registered with the police and most of these complaints have been made by women.

 

According to Ravindu Meegasmulla, engineer of The National Cyber Security Centre a number of complaints have been made by women who have been sexually harassed in the cyber space.

 

Nude Images 

 

Getting intimate with women and later releasing nude photos or blackmailing has become a frequent occurrence. The Cybercrime unit of the Police has come across a number of cases where personal information has been obtained thru asking female candidates to fill in job applications on the internet and later this information has been used to exploit vulnerable women.

 

Online Learning 

 

Senior Superintendent of Police Ms Dharshika Kumari Ranasinharaci said that pedophiles are using online teaching to exploit data including images obtained from on line teaching.  The police warns  that online teaching for children needs to be supervised by parents.

 

A cybercriminal who was arrested for raping a teenage girl had more than  had more than  8,000 indecent photographs on his mobile phone said Ms  Ranasinhaarachi.
 According to the police uploading of videos and images of phonographic nature is done by organized gangs who operate from rural areas where they think that detection is less likely. However in the past the police have been able to arrest a number of criminal gangs who operated from the North Central Province.
