Procedure of electing a President by parliament explained

The Department of Communication of the Sri Lanka Parliament has explained the procedure to be followed on Tuesday (19) and Wednesday (20) as the legislature elects a new President through a poll for the first time in the country’s history.
Although there was one previous experience of electing a president by parliament in Sri Lanka, this time is special, it said.
If the office of the President becomes vacant before the end of his term in office, the procedure for electing a new president by Parliament is provided in the Constitution and the Presidential Elections (Special Provisions) Act (No. 2 of 1981).
