No tank in Sinharaja - UNESCO National Commission

The government will not proceed on building a tank within the Sinharaja rainforest said Dr. Punchinilame e s the Secretary-General of Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO (SLNCU).

 

He said that he met irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa  and explained matters and the minister has agreed not to go ahead  and said that he will explore alternatives.
 Dr Punchinilame Meegaswatta said that under the proposed plan that there would be a over spill at the Magugate point in to the rain forest and that would cause destruction to the eco system.

 

Environmentalist point out that Dr Punchinilame Meegaswatta is a political appointee of the government and environmentalist Ravindra Kariyawasam said they need to further  peruse the matter with UNESCO Paris.
