Former Governor of WP Azath Salley arrested

Former Governor of Western Province Azath Salley has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department on March 16.

 

Attorney General's coordinating officer State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne stated that the above arrest has been made on the advice of the Attorney General.

 

Azath Salley recently made controversial statements in relation to  the law of the country in response to the plans by Justice Minister Ali Sabry to revise Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act by November.

 

He had further stated that he will only respect the Quran, the Hadiths and Shariah but not the laws of the government.

 

Consequently, a number of complaints were recieved by the CID and a team of CID officers led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police was appointed to inquire into his statements.

 

As adequate evidence has revealed that he has committed an offence under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and violated the International Covenant on Civil and Political. Rights (ICCPR) Act, No. 56 of 2007, the Attorney General has instructed the CID to arrest him.
