32 SSPs file FR petition against appointment of SL's first female DIG

Supreme Court will take up for consideration a fundamental rights petition seeking annulment of the promotion of Bimshani Jasin Arachchi, Sri Lanka’s first female Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).
The petition was taken up before a three-judge bench comprising of Justices Murdu Fernando, Shiran Gunaratne, and Achala Vengappuli today (February 16).
As per the sources, 32 Senior Superintendents have filed the petition challenging the appointment of DIG Bimshani Jasinghe Arachchi, claiming her appointment was made in violation of the standard promotion procedure for Senior Police officers.
The petitioners further stated that a woman cannot hold the post of DIG in Sri Lanka, as the regulations pertaining to the appointment of women to the post of DIG do not provide for the use of the word ‘women’.
