At least 14 persons have died and 74 others injured in 121 motor traffic accidents reported over the past 24 hours, a senior policeman said. He said that 12 accidents took place on expressways while the remaining occurred elsewhere.

The bulk of the accidents involved three wheelers and motorcycles. Some 53 motorcycles and 30 three wheelers were involved in the accidents, the official added.

An official at Colombo National Hospital said 120 accident victims were treated between Tuesday (13, April) and the following day.

Meanwhile a total of 758 drunk drivers were taken into custody during a special police operation carried out throughout the country to check on motorists under the influence of alcohol.
