In India, thousands of those who survived from coronavirus ended up in hospitals with mucormycosis, a dangerous post- covid fungal condition.

The complaints varied from blurred vision to droopy eyelids and nasal discharge. Diabetics and persons with weakened immune systems were at a higher risk. The only treatment in many cases is to remove the fungus from the diseased region, which is frequently the eye.

One cause for the increase in such instances in India, according to doctors, is the widespread usage of steroids to treat covid-19 sufferers. Steroids help serious covid patients recover, but they also leave them more vulnerable to infection by raising blood sugar levels.

According to Indian specialists, people who get an infection in their eyes have a 70% chance of surviving. If the infection spreads to the brain, however, the chances of survival drop to 10% - 15%.

More than 28,000 cases of this rare but deadly virus have been reported across India.
