The first poppy flower is laid to the President to commemorate Memorial Day

Maj. Gen. Upul Perera, President of the Ex-Servicemen's Association of Sri Lanka, presented a poppy flower to the President on the occasion.

Proceeds from the sale of poppies will be used for the welfare of retired and disabled war heroes.

Many countries around the world celebrate Remembrance Day annually on November 11, and in Sri Lanka on the Sunday closest to November 11.
