The police were n for a surprise when Fort Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage told the police officers presenting a case on those who breached quarantine laws. The group of five people who were with a transgender identity were charged for breaking quarantine laws in the Kollupitiya area.

They were described in court “wes walagaththa pirimi” or “men in disguise”.

Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage  said that it is time to acknowledge that there are more than two  genders  and explained the value of gender parity .

Many activists who acknowledge the rights of the transgender community have welcomed the magistrates move and emphasized that much more needs to be done to safeguard the rights of the community. According to the Penal Code “carnal intercourse against the order of nature” and   Cheating by personation” is an offense. These clauses could be used to criminalize the activities of the transgender community.
