Cabinet approves the drafting of Sign Language Bill

The proposal to make the required provisions via an Act of Parliament for making Sign Language a recognized way of communication and to advise the legal draftsman to draft the relevant bill has been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. 

 

As per the Department of Government Information , the said proposal had been tabled by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

 

Accordingly, the hearing-imapaired community in the country will be empowered via the recognition of  Sign Language as a recognized way of communication in accessing educational needs, legal matters, health facilities, various government services and private services.
