Grade 8 Geography : Uniqueness of the Earth - Part 7

As the earth orbits the sun while rotating at its own axis with an axial tilt of 23.5 0, the positioning of the sun changes and it occurs on different latitudes on the earth’s surface during various periods in every year. This has led to the occurrence of seasonal changes that are inculcated with specific climatic features or patterns. The four main seasons on earth can be cited as spring, summer, autumn and winter. The equatorial regions on earth have low seasonal variation.

If we consider the areas that experience seasonal changes throughout the year, the highest temperature of a year is reported during the summer season. Also, the daytime is quite longer. However, the two hemispheres experience seasons during different periods. The northern hemisphere experiences summer in June while it sets in the southern hemisphere in December. The temperature tends to reduce gradually during the autumn season. The falling of leaves is a common site during this time. Owing to this this season is sometimes referred to as the “fall” as well. This season arrives at the northern hemisphere in September whereas it sets in March in the case of the southern hemisphere.

Winter is the season with the least temperature and it is experienced by the areas of the northern hemisphere in December. The countries in the southern hemisphere experience winter in June. Snow fall is prevalent during this time and the night is too long. Trees tend to shed all their leaves during the winter season. Spring is the season during which extremely low temperature tends to rise gradually and the frozen environment begins to come back to life. Snow and ice begin to melt away and the plants begin to bloom. Spring arrives at the northern hemisphere in the month of March and in the case of the southern hemisphere, it sets in September.
