The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the World’s largest coral reef which is located in the Coral Sea, on Australia’s North-Eastern coast, along the state of Queensland. What’s special about the Great Barrier Reef is that, it extends over an area of 348,700 km² and due to such an expansion, there are numerous and a vast range of ecological communities, habitats and species that add up to a collection in which most of the complex natural ecosystems in the World are found.

This magnificent destination, which has also been recorded as a world heritage site in 1981, by UNESCO, is indeed a home to more than 1500 species of fish, 400 types of corals and 4000 types of molluscs plus a great diversity of sponges, anemones, marine worms, crustaceans and many others. It also holds a great scientific interest as the habitat of species such as the ‘dugong’, sea cow and the large green turtle that is threatened in extinction. This reef is exceptionally a home to diverse marine life of the most vivid colors found beneath its heart. It is not only a place to for sight-seeing yet this reef enables a thrill of adventure to all the divers and tourists to view and experience the beauty of the coral reef.

Additionally, it is noted that due to the establishment of the vegetation and continental islands along the reef, significant roles by the pigeons and other sea-birds are portrayed, including seed dispersal and plant colonization. The beauty of the reef although has its threats, mainly due to pollution and climate change, which indeed has a negative impact to the corals that may bleach as they are unable to keep up with rising temperatures and ocean warming, prevailing within the Ocean. Thus, the Great Barrier Reef is definitely a must-see destination to all.
